Georges-Louis Leclerc, Comte de Buffon (17807—1788) was a prominent French naturalist, mathematician, and cosmologist. He is best known for his extensive work in natural history, particularly through his monumental series Histoire naturelle, générale et particulière, which he began publishing in 1749.
