Robert Walser (1878—1956), a Swiss author, is regarded as one of the most influential writers of the modern era, whose work has had a wide impact. However, during his lifetime he was largely ignored and struggled with poverty, which resulted in a mental breakdown in 1929; he spent the remainder of his life in institutions and anonymity. His work was rediscovered in the 1970s.
