For nearly 50 years, Dr. Volker Hettler’s professional activities have been closely linked to the territory of the Soviet Union and the post-Soviet region. His career spans from 1976—starting with the Druzhba pipeline project (Ukrainian section)—to consultancy work in Moldova in 2021–2022. He lived in Ukraine for nearly 20 years, during which time he completed his doctorate, served as managing director of Ukrainian-German companies and institutes, and advised political and municipal policymakers at various levels; he also led and supported GIZ projects, most recently in Moldova in 2021–2022. Regardless of Putin’s invasion of Ukraine—which violated international law—he has participated and continues to participate in various EU projects in the humanitarian sector. In this context, he maintains close ties with representatives of Ukrainian civil society.
